Understanding and sanctuary for all who have suffered

The whole ethos behind the Gut Aiderbichl sanctuary is that humans and animals alike are entitled to a secure and happy life. This means a life free from endangerment. It's easy to see that this applies to the animals at Gut Aiderbichl when you spot the free-ranging animals wandering across your path and endangered species that are normally extremely shy coming to eat out of your hand. You feel as though you've entered into a different world of mutual trust and kindness.

Gut Aiderbichl is a genuine animal sanctuary. Michael Aufhauser and his team help injured and threatened animals, often providing the last refuge available to them. And they have plenty of these refugees, with the facility currently incorporating 23 farm buildings housing over 5,000 animals. The animals that come here stay until the end of their natural lives. That's the special thing about Gut Aiderbichl: it's not just a waystation. It's a true home for the animals, where they will never know fear or stress, and can wander around at will.

Natural materials – integrated into the natural landscape of the Flachgau

The buildings and stables are constructed entirely from natural materials. Timber is cut only during a certain phase of the moon and is not treated with any chemicals, relying entirely on natural timber protection methods. Construction relies on techniques that have been handed down through the generations, with no reference to modern architecture. The Gut Aiderbichl animal sanctuary has been designed to blend into the natural and cultural scenery of Salzburg's Flachgau region – and the plan has succeeded.
