Explore inside the erected farmhouses still preserved today and take a trip on the historical museum railway.
Not just culture but also an experience of nature
A Salzburg cultural asset nestled in stunning nature. That's how you could describe the open-air museum. The site at the base of the Unterberg mountain is situated in a beautiful nature conservation area and is based on the historical regions of the federal state of Salzburg. A more than 7 km long network of paths links up the Flachgau, Tennengau, Pongau, Pinzgau and Lungau groups of buildings, just like in the actual state but smaller. There is a range of permanent exhibitions in the historical buildings. What is particularly interesting are the craftsmanship demonstrations that take place regularly, these specifically focus on what work was like many centuries ago.
Railway or time machine?
At first glance you could think that the museum railway at the open-air museum is a time machine. It whisks guests away to times long past and travels through the site on a 1.7 km long track. The railway runs between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. and one trip is included in the admission price. It links the groups of buildings at the open-air museum and starts in the Flachgau area. Right next to the middle station in Tennengau is the cosy Salettl museum restaurant.
A cosy break after a long museum visit
After a long, interesting day at the open-air museum you have earned a cosy break. Be Rudi Wohland's guest and be indulged by him and his team. Regional specialities and great seats with a wonderful view in the historical pavilion await you in the Salettl.
