A pilgrimage on the Way of St. James
The Way of St. James through the Salzburger Land region

Pilgrimages and pilgrim trails are totally trendy. More and more people want to leave their stressful everyday life behind them and find themselves. Thousands of people go on a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James to Spain every year but did you know that it also leads through the Salzburger Land region and more precisely very close to the Landgasthof Kirchbichl?

Coming from Tyrol, go past Salzburg, continue towards Linz

That's right. Many people associate the Way of St. James with Spain as its breathtaking final destination is in Santiago de Compostela. However, the Way of St. James is most definitely not a Spanish phenomenon, it runs across the whole of Europe and in doing so comes through our beautiful Salzburger Land.

A little bit of history

James, a disciple of Jesus, supposedly came as far as Spain as a missionary. After his return to Jerusalem though he was killed in 44 AD and his body was supposedly brought to Spain. His grave was only rediscovered in Spain in the 9th century and since then James has been celebrated as a patron saint. Every year thousands of pilgrims from all over the world go on a pilgrimage to James' supposed burial site in Santiago de Compostela.

Set off on the way to yourself

For many people going on a pilgrimage is about self-awareness. Nowadays especially, when for many people their relationship with themselves is being pushed more and more into the background. Walking just a section of the Way of St. James is a special experience for many people to reflect, find their own centre and gain new strength. Going on a pilgrimage towards Santiago holds a special fascination. The older pilgrim trail in Spain has been revitalised and made famous again since the 1980s. In 1982 Pope John Paul II visited Santiago and called on the old continent to revive its roots and many people are following this calling.
